Pigeonblood's 40g Hightec Planted Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok so a little on the updates! Still no pictures as I havent had time to upload them to my comp, I just moved home today and am leaving for washington on friday. Ill be back the following friday and will definitely post some pics then. I basically plan on ordering a bunch of stuff so that it is here by the time I get back. I move into my new apartment on the 15 so I can really get things moving then. Im planning on ordering a few key items for the tank online and then Im going to get started on the stand build! if anyone has any good links to some nice stand builds post them! Ill try to get some pics of the tank tomorrow so you guys can see how sweet this thing is!

JasonG75, have you had good experience with the sand on top of dirt long term? I tried that, and 3 months later the whole substrate was basically all anearobic and all the plant roots died. Switched the sand out for gravel and that solved it.

Sorry i know the question is not for me, but i think snails would easily solve this, trumpet snails to be specific. They're really cheap but once you have them it can be difficult to get rid of them, although they aren't bad.

Layering the substrate so the smallest grain size is on the bottom is the best, that way gases can escape....

SO MORE UPDATES

Still no pictures :( I worked late tonight, BUT i get paid tomorrow so im definitely ordering a bunch of stuff tomorrow night!!!!! CANT WAIT FOR IT!Im going to do some research and Ill post updates of what I figure out after

I have tried the MTS and it still doesn't do the trick. You need to be able to get oxygen down into the substrate for it to work.

Pigeonblood, where are you ordering your plants from?

The LFS by me caries an amazing selection of plants and I get everything 50% off. Im also going to order from aquabid.com as I know a few peeps on there!

ANYWAYS! Sorry I didnt update last night, I fell asleep as I had to be up at five am for work this morning;but here is where I am currently at. I am ordering some hardware tonight. I still need to decide what light fixture I want to get and all that but everything else is pretty much set in stone. I am still trying to decide if I want to take my comp on this trip so that I can get on MFK, but I dont want to use to much of my packing space. I will definitely be posting pics of the tank tonight to give you give a taste of what I have sitting right in front of me!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure you had enough, i never heard of pumping oxygen into the substrate usually the MTS snails dig threw it, thus preventing gas pockets from building up, they still form but just don't build up because of the MTS snails, and so you don't get the giant gas bubbles that can harm your fish. Maybe you should try it with more snails, the only thing that puts oxygen in the substrate is bacteria, Snails and worms and Probably roots(maybe not). If that doesn't work then your substrate is either to deep or to dirty, give it a good cleaning and vacuum, i can image to mach debris can lead to an excess of becateria which then leads to more gas buildup. Hope thats helps.

I'm also want to know where you got your plants pigeonblood, a website i used to order from messed up my orders a few times, and it really frustrated me.
