280g on the way, now thinking about my sump. going to find a tank, 55g at the least to build a sump in. here's what i got right now. water from tank runs into sump through (2) 200 micron filter socks 7"x17" through a holding resevoir for added volume then through as many pot scrubbies as i can stuff. thinking 1600-2000gph. i built one just like this for my 180 but never got to use it. it ran great at 1200gph
sump.pngjust wondering if i should do without the channel between the socks and added volume. not thinking its really needed

You could potentially integrate a moving bed filter into that empty space by using Kaldnes K1 or a similar media; that will help to boost your biological filtration.

i considered that but i may use the space as a grow out or a place to seperate stingray pups without having to set up another tank

Sump grow outs are just not possible with the high flow. Think about it. This sump design is for a 280 gallon tank and the sump is only 55 gallons and not all the way full. So this sump is 6 times smaller with the same amount of flow as the primary tank. This sump with have 6X the flow as the primary tank. How can a fish "grow out" in this environment?
Just take a second and think about it................

true, never thought about it. i had a few madtom catfish that repeatedly migrated to my 180 sump and did great at 1100gph

Add some K-1 or simular to the open section you wont be sorry.

I will give you an A+ for your design! I like your simplistic approach. It should serve your 280 tank very well without having a bunch of extra complexity and unneeded compartments. I do not see any reason for the added partitions between the filter socks and the "Added Volume" chamber. (You could widen these two partitions and add a top plate between the two with a couple of holes for 25 or 50 micron socks????)

Your design is very reminiscent of many very successful commercial designs I have studied.

I would throw in some air stones under the scrubbies. The "Added Volume" looks like a great place to put your heater(s)... very easy to get to for tweaking the temperature.

You could always add some K1 to the "Added Volume" chamber at anytime down the road, I think your design will have plenty of bio capacity as is.
