I generally just say hello and introduce myself. I don't try and make friends. Friendships will make themselves. All you have to do is initiate the contact and be yourself.

First, BE YOURSELF! Never let the desire to fit in force you to become something you are not.
Second, get involved in some extracuricular activites whether they be sports or whatever.
Third, keep an eye out for what I wouldl call out of the loop fellow students. One's that seem to not fit in. Make that effort to at least acknowledge them so that they too can know that they are not outcast
Fourth, keep yourself out of any drug/gang subculture that might be there. While being involved in such things may give you the thought that you are part of a "family" is it really the kind of family you want to be part of.
Lastly, have many acquaintences and few friends.

Thats some of the best advice on here. Also, don't worry so much about it. I don't know a single person that is still friends with people from high school other than on Facebook. College is the place to make some lifelong friends. Just be yourself and if its meant to be, it'll happen. If you try too hard to make friends, you'll only push people away. Good luck!
Best advice I can give- RELAX. Just stay relaxed and do your thing. Annnnnnd maybe dont tell everyone about your awesome fish. It's only cool to a very few of us haha.

Go talk to your basketball friends, be like "Hey, I go to school here now...maybe we can shoot around after school or something?"
