Interesting mix of fish. I used to have nics. They are colorful and very gutsy. Like big firemouths. I know there are two variants. There are the costa rican and the nicaraguan. Costa ricans look better and have the greenish/blue heads and nicaraguans have the brownish colored heads.
 
IDk nics seem to come in a variety of slight color variations. They are very underrated though. They are stunning fish with great personalities.

Dont worry so much,man! These nics are extremely adaptable.They actually were breeding all the time in that skull with all them peacocks(no zebras!).My male nic devastated some flowerhorns2,that were bigger than him and had no problems w/ the africans.The nics are bigger than the africans though and set the tone of peace!You are right though-american cichlids dont play!
 
Interesting mix but fish look great.

My Nics look very similar to yours. Male is about 8". Fairly gentle and tolerent of other tankmates, including their grow outs. Favorite of all my fish.
