I have never kept any eartheaters ever so it was good to get an opportunity to shoot these. The fish belong to a young local lad so I can only take credit for the pics. :-)

you do some great work, can i ask how can a novice with a decent point and shoot(canon A630)digital camera get some better shots? i can get lucky with some, but i think i could change some manual settings and do better.any tips would be great!

Hey Brenton,

Great shots as usual, crystal clear focus and all very well framed.

What are your thoughts on the overhead flash and how the photographs display these fish though, particularly eartheaters with their predominant silver/iridescence? Just wanting to know what you think, as when you compare your home photographs of your larger cichlids, the colour reproduction is fantastic, but these shots (seem to) struggle to capture the real colours of the fish. For example the last shot is fantastic, great iridescence on the side of the heckelii and fantastic illumination in the fins - but that's not what the fish looks like. Is exposure a balance issue?

Don't take this critique/query the wrong way, just interested in your opinion as this is the main reason why I haven't purchased external flash gear.

Hey japes. Critique is welcome mate. These were in a tank that was influenced by tannins. Most also being pretty young specimens too like the tapajos who would normally show more orange etc. The heckelii, especially the male was very hesitant to come out, hence the black stress marks. Here is a shot that would be pretty much spot on to the fish that I was looking at in person there. The only shot that he seemed more relaxed in. A predominant silver that you mention was not the case at all with these subjects. Maybe different lighting over the tank or the tannins staining the water making the difference?

A larger tapajos from the tank showing more signs of silver but the smaller specimens were pretty much as pictured above.(except for the 3rd image which I have deliberately drained of color)
