Pangasius Sanitwongsei size

This is the documented biggest Paroon ever caught. It's 5'1 foot. 150lb. Caught in a private fishing lake, so it's never gone hungry!

They usually max out at 4 foot but can reach 5. Probably never more but there are a few reports of Thai fishermen landing a 650lb monster that would make it rival the Gigas for size. Berlin zoo and Animal Kingdom in Florida have adult Paroon in generous housings (cleaner water than the vile Mekong/Chao Phraya) that are no longer than 4 foot.
It will be interesting to see how big TL's Paroon gets unless he completely overstocks his pond!

On a side note everyone seems to think an ID Shark gets to 4 foot but I think this is ludicrous too. 30 inch max maybe. For me it's all just insane measurement to get people buying them at their LFS so they can brag in the pub how big their new fish could get! or measurements by concerned folk in the trade/hobby looking to put people off!
TL cat most likely a bit less than 4 feet, and I don't think he can overstock his pond since he's getting a much bigger pond!
I don't know if ID shark can get more than 3ft! I got 3 of them, they grow from 5'' to 20'' in 2 years then slow way down, 3 years later they are about 2 feet each. right now it's about 8 years since I got them, but I don't know how big are they now because i moved to the U.S 3 years ago and a relative is taking care of them!

How big a tank should you really have to own a full grown paroon shark?

I mean people on sites keep specifying that they can grow to HUGE sizes as in 10ft/3 m and 646lbs/293kg, but honestley who has ever seen or heard of a documented account of a P.sanitwongsei that large or even close?

The current world record is a fish of 90lbs 6 oz/41kg, and the longest specimen on foto i've ever seen whas about 5ft long and these are all wild specimens. This is still big but not as huge as above mentioned.

So really how big a tank do you really need for these guys?
Oh, and if you have some pics of paroons please do post them :headbang2

minimum 4000-4800gal and then a good tank size would be about 6000gallons
so a tank about 16 x 10 x 5 ft

Thanks for the info aropwn, but why would you recommend such a wide tank ? Wouldn't they prefer a long tank with adequate turning space rather than a squarish tank ?

because they will smash into the wall a lot of time in a tank with small width

My ID Shark has grown since I got him but not a whole lot. More often than not it can take a couple of years before fish get as big as some of the big claims. One year to 12 inches for some fish sounds reasonable, others grow slow and can take 2+ years or more. The way some talk about it, you would think they get 100 feet in 3 months only and shoot fire from their fins lol. I usually take warnings with a grain of salt, my Panga fish is growing but not that fast. I would bet a year from now he will not be over 12 inches but I could be wrong. ID Shark and Paroon Shark are pretty much the same fish, one being darker than the other.

nope, ID shark are smaller than paroon, while my ID sharks are only about 2 feet after 5 years (reached 20'' in first two years and grow very slow after that), many people paroon shark reach 3ft easy!

I have 3 Paroon and 3 ID sharks. The ID sharks are 15 months old and are between 4 inch to 6 inch. The Paroons are about a month old, eat like mad and are already pushing 3 inches. I think a lot of ID Sharks sold in the UK are a different Pangasius species to the tank busters sold in the US and Malaysia. Maybe they are getting Bocourti or similar?

Well it seems Tim Webb has done it again :WHOA:. Seems he has broken the P.sanitwongsei record again, and this time smashed it with a fish 11kg heavier than the previous 56kg record fish. The fish is just over 5ft which shows that maybe the mythical tales of giant paroon sharks might be true. Can't wait to see the next record :popcorn:which I guess will still be coming from Palm Tree Lagoon, Thailand.
