I was talking to a professor today from San Antonio , he mentioned South American Lungifsh will soon be placed into three subspecies and CITES will put them under Appendix 2 , anyone have any insight to this ? What are the chances of any african species becoming second level ?

Is keeping a pair or 1m / 2f in a large tank just not condusive for a south american lungfish ? I've seen pictures of groups of babies being kept together , and I've seen freshly imported adults kept together as well .

Keeping multiple lungfish together eventually results in fighting 99% of the time. If I recall correctly, one of the mods has bred SALs before, and he mentioned that he only kept them together for the brief amount of time required for mating and fertilization in order to prevent them from beating the crap out of each other.

Very interesting! I had no idea they were in trouble cuz they are not the most popular fish to keep in the hobby.

I don't know if it's them actually being in trouble or it's just a means to better manage the species.

The range of the SA Lung isn't within the area that we generally characterize as part of the amazon, so it's possibly a means to increase the visibility of the species and to help promote protection of the habitats that it is part of.

As for actual news, I've done some google searching and have found no news or indication of such a move. Likewise, IUCN does not even list the species as Least Concern on the Red List, so it's probably an idea being passed around right now by Latin American Environment and Wildlife Trade Officials.
