Just about everfy flowerhorn is different. If your buying small buy from a good genetic line and try to see what the Parents look like. Or find one that has a little size to it were you see potential. And keep the water clean! oh ya dont use a Black backround I found it totally changes the color of the flowerhorn usually makes them dark in color.
