Why does my oscar sleep like it's dead?

if your fish is 2 female or 1male 1 female, they will be fine. but if you have 2 male, the big one will kill the small one!

that's not always true.. some oscars don't get along with ANY fish.

If they are having these acts of aggression and being territorial now I can only believe that it will get worse once the smaller one hits sexual maturity, not better. IMO this tank really isn't big enough for two full grown Oscar and this really shows by these acts of aggression and trying to stake out territory. 4ft long is a problem. Longer tanks definitely help when keeping more than one semi aggressive territorial cichlid together.

right, but usually it go that way! it's also depend on the fish! the best he can get for those 2 is the big one is male and the small one is female, that way they will protect each other rather than killing! but that just luck!

Hey, thanks your about the only one who has give me compliments and constructive criticism. i will get a bigger tank, 180 gall, as soon as i can find one on ebay or the other sites but also i think that the albino will have reached maturisy by now? i thought they got mature at about 5-6 inches.. if thats wrong then thats the fault of a guy in the shop, cause thats what he told me, some of these people are useless haha xD

i am not an expert but i had an experienced with oscar by accident. 48 x 24 x 24 has a good foot print and can house two fully adult oscars. however, you need hardwork and dedication. other members may disagree but please take note, "what may not work for you may work for others".

i am not sure what do you mean by maturity in an oscar.... but if you are referring to pairing or spawning, size is not the basis. an oscar who are about 6 inches but more than 14 months may start spawning while at 10 inches but young as less than a year will not. i will share some pics of my oscars wherein the lutino is from the offspring of my pair white oscar:

thanks a bunch man, those are beautiful oscars, as to maintaining my tank i spend many hours per week on it, and do one water change every weekend ect. thanks for the support, i seem to be lacking it on this supposed community.

I have two oscars, a 17cm one and a 27 cm one, the 17 cm one always sleeps right on the top of the water lying right on its side, yet the bigger one stays at the bottom and just stays still. are both of these normal behaviour?

my oscar do sleep the same way... sometimes floating like dead... but one thing i have noticed, they never closed their eyes while sleeping..

ALSO my oscars fight at night, never in the day, theyve lived toghether for a few months now and sometimes when im in bed (the tank is opposite my bed) they wake me up with splashing then i turn the light on and the smaller one is on its side at the top again.

do keep lights on during night? if not, you need to check if no one is poking your fish? sometimes, when the fish touch the heater, they dart away hitting anything along the way!

the fish never really have signs of harm but the little on did have a scraped mouth not long ago but that could have been something else apart from fighting..

yes, this may be the result of darting at night time.

i'm not judging you.. just making an accurate statement/answer to a question you posted. Your tank may be fine for you, but it's simply not large enough for 2 grown oscars. Yes, everyone has their own opinions, but what's not is an opinion is that you have 2 Oscars together in a tank in which will not house them BOTH for life.

You're upgrading.. let's make a thread for every person who says this. Post pics when it happens, and then no one will say anything about your tank size.

came back to this thread to give you the news that you probably weren't expecting. Ive now got my 180 gal. it costed me £75 and cam with 6 2x3's 8 foo tlong that the guy didnt want ill be gettign ti set up this weekend.

nice! glad to hear u got a 180 for a good deal. even if not hell ur 15 and have 2 oscars in a 120, most kids would have 3-4 in a 55 or they'd have been dead by 4" so props to you and dont let people get you down, one major theme you'll notice on MFK unfortunately are people raging about tank size, and while 4x2x2 was pushing it a bit its not like they were chilling in a 20 gallon. keep up the good work and keep us updated
