ok so i wanted to set up my 29 gallon tank with a breeding pair of convicts or a breeding pair of firemouths (i know that 29g is the minimum for a pair of these guys) so i was browsing petsmart today and noticed that the baby convicts and baby firemouths were on sale for 1.99 a piece... so i went ahead and bought 3 baby firemouths and 3 baby convicts for my 29 gallon tank. im hoping 2 of the convicts and/or 2 of the firemouths will pair off and i will get rid of the rest of the fish!! but would it be able to work with a pair of firemouths AND a pair of convicts?? what do you guys think will happen?? :WHOA:

Here is what will happen, 2 will prob get killed, 2 will pair off and everything will be killed till just a pair is left. Convicts and be really mean when breeding

Sad, but true...that will likely happen :(

I agree. Having two mating pairs of an aggressive cichlid in a tank is a disaster waiting to happen. Not to mention a tank that is bare minimum size wise.

would a breeding pair kill a gold nugget or royal pleco?
Probably

I had a breeding pair of Elliot's or "Golden Firemouth" cichlids which are a similar species to the FMs (more aggressive from what I've heard, but I've never kept normal FMs) with a third Elliot's, 3 Thorichthys aurem, and a Nic in a 75 gallon and when they bred, I had to put in a divider to keep them from killing all of the other fish. In a 29, when either breeding pair forms, you will have a warzone. I would pick one of the two pairs and get rid of everything else

what are the chances that nothing at all pairs up? out of 3 random fms and 3 random convicts

Do you know the gender of each convict? They're pretty easy to sex, females will generally have orange around the belly. Also, there's a possibility a convict and a firemouth will hybrid pair. For pairing a group of 6+ fish of one species is better. I'd pick either convicts or firemouths, I think the firemouths will have a tough time with a breeding pair of convicts.
