Community Cichlids (there are a few)

Realized my thread I linked to doesn't list nics. Those might fit the bill as well, although an adult male might be cramped in a 55.

I didn't realize you were going to keep these in a 55 sorry I misunderstood I you were going to start a new tank. In that case look at some of the smaller Latacara sp. I have owned some nasty Sajica so be cautious there. sorry again for the misunderstanding. I 55 is very small so you are limited.

As far as cryptoheros, I think there are better choices than either cutteri or sajica as far as aggression goes. What about nanos?

Sajica would be too aggressive. The Laetacara suggestion is a good one, too - curviceps or dorsigerus would be great.

mmm... all cichlids no matter how small or harmless-looking will be aggressive to to some extent, Sajica are not the exception but they're generally peaceful. Even goldfish can be aggressive... so...

Notes on above, the op asked for smaller cichlids and severum and chocolates and a couple others up above are not smaller cichlids. I would add the biotodoma cupido and the other biotodoma "w" something. My cupids are really great community fish and just do a bit of flaring with each other but have never bothered another fish. Some places say they are very aggressive and either I have 5 that just don't match the write-up or the person writing doesn't know what they are talking about. They are supposed to max out at 5 inchs. Mine are just shy of a year and 2 of them are nearly 4 inches.
