125 gallon native filtration and water flow questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 Magnums are up and running. Stuffed the inner canister with scrubbies and then sleeved the outside with the foam. Both are making great pressure and move the water nicely. To help with air, I added a 1250gph pump that sits over an airstone. It pushes a heck of a stream about 3/4 across the tank. So far, so good.

I find that hard to believe.

I thought so at first too - but have never ran a FX5. I had one Magnum 350 on the 125 for a while and it moved water nicely; although I'm sure it's filtering ability is limited at that size. When I turned the second on I could literally watch the water clearing. 3 should rock.

Well I had to put my fx5 on my 55 gallon temporarily, because my xp4 started leaking, so I had to get new O rings. I felt bad for my fish, because there was so much flow. I doubt the small difference between a 55 and 75 is going to make it go from too much flow to not enough. I also have an Eheim 2080 on a 54 gallon aquarium. I realize it's odd dimensions to spread flow out, but I can only run the flow rate at 3/4 or it pushes my fish around.

How you liking the Rena? I have an xp2 on a 29 gallon and had to cut the flow WAY back. I really like that filter. The LFS has a XP3 for 15 bucks that just needs an impeller and media. Probably going to pounce on that.

I have an xp3 that's a great filter. I've had a little trouble with the xp4 recently. I'm running the output through a UV sterilizer though and think it's causing the problem. It just keeps getting air in when servicing and has a terrible time trying to get rid of it. I'm going to try bypassing the UV and see if that fixes it. The xp3 has been working great with only occasional cleaning and starts right back up.

Well best of luck with the 4! Hope it works out.
