Hey there guys.

I am fairly new to keeping Cichlids and my convict pair laid there first batch of eggs and they hatched a fem hours ago now the poor male has been taking a beating from the female :( his fins are torn and he has a few scales that has been bitten he seems to be fine hides a lot and comes out now and then but just get into trouble.

So what I would like to know is... think I should keep him in the tank?
...will his shredded fins heal up?
any suggestions?

Sometimes when there's no other fish in the tank, the female of a breeding pair will see the male as a threat and become aggressive towards him. I'm not exactly sure why but it must have something to do with the fact that males generally patrol the territory for intruders while females attend the fry. I would recommend adding a target/dither fish and see how it goes... something fast like tiger barbs or some of the bigger tetras. If not you might have to use a divider but I doubt this is what you want.

To answer your other question, yes he will heal as long as she doesn't keep attacking him. Good water quality and a stress-free environment is all he needs to recover the damaged fins. Good luck w them!

Thanks so much yes your theory seems to fit the situation the best I'll get some barbs for the tank.

The tank is on the small side it is a 2foot tank. Current on the look out for a much bigger tank.

Targets and/or dithers won't last long in a 2 foot tank with a breeding pair of cons. I'd be surprised if they last more than a few days. Good luck on your search for a bigger tank. I've had success with breeding cons in a 29 with a bunch of hiding spots. Usually its the female that takes the beating rather than the male.

I found a solution glass shrimp they way to quick for her but they cheeky enough to keep her focusing on them making the male relax. These shrimp are very funny and very entertaining. Thanks for the advice :D
