I would say both fish in question are male.

Recources, 7 year experiance breeding salvini, in that time I have seen only 2 confirmed females that did not have a spot on there gill plate.

Once you said "red belly" I knew this was most likely a female. Males have some red, but not near as much as females. Beatiful female too.

This is not always the case. There are some variants where the males have just as much red coloration as many of the females.

Hi folks, rather than starting a new thread I thought I would try and post here for an answer as I have just brought a salvini the other week. Male right?

Female in back. It has the spot on the gill plate.

But like I said I did come across a few females that dident have the gill spot. I went through thousands of fry and probably 30ish difrent females for my male. The spot was the best way I could sex them. I of course think size is a good way to sex them as well, I never had a female above 5 1/4" but have had a few males around the 7" mark. And could recall someone saying they had a male at 8". Females might grow a little bigger, but mine never did because they were always breeders. And of course all of this is just my experiance and I'm not a scientist, and it cetainly isent fact. Just what I experianced with raising sals for years.
