hi, i would like to know what the best tank dimensions are for a dovii in your opinion, because someday in my life i would like to have a dovii/wolf cichlid, the minimum and good size aquarium in my opinion is 90 L X 40 W X 25-30 H. another question, are dovii solitary or can they be housed with a large catfish (20-30 inches), thanks!

You could get away with 96"x36"x30"). You could keep a pair together, but other than that, pretty much solitary..

Promblem with dovi is thier huge teeth and they are not afraid to use them. I would say no to tank mates and hell for a mate.

i agree it would be hell for a mate, can you imagine a 28 inch male dovii with their fangs biting onto a 15-16 inch female dovii's tail for breeding? ouch, and for other fish the dovii would most be likely to harass or kill the fish for fun i guess

dovii in perfect conditions in 5 years or longer are gonna max at maybe 24" so a 96"x30"x24" tank is the minimum id do with a 36" wide tank being ideal without going crazy. no umbee with dovii and a big cat is also not a good idea cause the cat is gonna grow way faster than the dovii and may eat it and if its the other way the doviis prolly gonna beat the crap out of the cat.

Did Mel ever keep his dovii and umbee together? Just curious. I agree with the above tank sizes stated--which few dovii keepers are willing/able to provide.

I think the aggression of dovii is sometimes overrated, i have never personally owned one, but of the ones i have seen they were all bark and no bite. At a cichlid store i frequent they have a large dovii, roughly 20" or so, which is housed in 8'x3'x2' tank with around 20 other cichlids ranging from 5" all the way up to 16" and he is one of the most docile in the tank. It really depends on the individual fish. I guess you could say that tank size requirements also rely on the individual fish as well as tank mate choices

I might get bad responses from this.....But this is what I think:

Obviously the bigger the better for a Dovii, so if you can provide a 30, 36, or deeper tank, that is awesome, and you should do so. It'll only be that much nicer for a Dovii.

But you'll be fine with a 6X2 (standard 180) print for life for a single male. An 8X2 (standard 240) would be even better for the extra swimming length.

To say that you'll be able to "get away" with a 90X40 footprint is a bit misleading. That would be a GREAT size tank for a Dovii. You won't just "get away" with it, you'll have a VERY happy Dovii in such a large tank.

There's just not a ton of males that get as big as Mel's, and most will max out around 20-22 inches. So I keep to the opinion that a 2' deep tank will be fine.

But to each their own. Everyone has a different opinion on what is necessary to keep one of these. An you do have to keep in mind that these guys are going to make a crazy large amount of mess in a 180 or a 240, and you are going to have to have a really big filtration system, and are going to have to do a LOT of BIG water changes. This is where haveing a bigger tank comes in really handy.
