The petsmart near me is actually pretty clean, sure the employees dont know anything, but they dont have pacus for sale atleast, and the fish seem decently healthy. I once asked an empoyee if they had any Polypterus sengalus, and got a weird look, then said senegal bichir, and she still just looked at me weird, and then I said, "it's eel like" and she replied "we have a knifefish, those are pretty much eels" I looked in a tank and actually found a few senegals, and I showed her and she goes "Oh! I call those dinosaurs"

lol...knifefish are pretty much like eels?

Haha I often find myself correcting those kinds of employees. The last thing we need is people killing their fish or releasing them.

Is this "practice" limited to pet store large chain stores. I defy anyone to say that the average Petsmart/ Petco is MORE CLUELESS of pets than Home Depot & Lowes employees are CLUELESS of Home Improvement.

Well at least in general the Lowes employees tend to fully admit total incompetence and simply honestly answer that they have NO IDEA! I believe that Home Depot employees are trained never to reply in an un-knowledgable fashion.

Just F'ing WTF WOW! Hey, the Pet Chainstore might encourage you to place a foot long fish into a five gallon tank. Bad, indeed. Your fish probably dies. Depend on a Home Improvement "specialist" at HMDP or Lowes for "how to" information, and you flat out take the lives of you and your family in one hand. It was a Home Depot employee that sold the three little pigs the straw with the assurance that the big bad wolf could not blow it down!

When I was young I had a 10gal tank my mom got me and she always wondered why the fish died when she did a water change (I was to young to do this at the time). Turns out the people at petmart told my mom to change ALL of the water - so that is what she did. Now she knows better of course, but really who tells you to change all of the water.=]

As for the fish in the 5 gal.... wow.... does not surprise me though.

You'd be surprised how often I've hear that people were told to change all the water...must be the same person spreading that viscous rumor lol

I don't ever go in any of the chain stores. I rather support my mom and pop stores so they will be around. Even though they are more expensive. I learned from my uncle back in 1968. He was an oldtimer in the hobby. The first thing he gave me when I was a kid in 68 was a book called Exoctic Aquarium fishes by Dr. William Innes. He said you want to start an aquarium read this book first and I will buy you a 10 gallon setup complete.

!

My other big hobby is home theater, don't even get me started on the idiots at Best Buy, even their higher end Magnolia section is stocked with mouth breathers who think $200 HDMI cables somehow magically transform a digital signal into manna from the gods.

It is rampant right now in the American economy, all the mom and pops that knew and cared about the product they sold are gone, and have been replaced with minimum wagers who are just trying to feed their kids and who have no desire to learn anything about the business because they know they can never become anything more than a chain store manager and are just feeding back to the customer what they were taught during their 3 hour orientation conducted by a corporate manager who hasn't seen the inside of the store in 30 years

My LFS got in like 10 tankfuls of pacus it's really sad :(
