Hello guys, i just got a new 55 gallon tank from a friend and I thought to ask you about my stocking ideas. What I have in mind is a one fish only tank. At first I wanted a single flowerhorn, but i have been hearing from others that 55 gallons are enough, and from other that I will need a 75 gallon or more. My other options that i like the most are (one only of these): green terror, jack dempsey and texas.
Someone suggested also a midas, but I dont think it will work in a 55 gallon.

So these are my options. As I said it is going to be a one speciment tank, although I would like to keep 1-2 tankmates if any of the fish I mentioned is not bothered. Any opinions and feedback are acceptable, so tell me what you think it will work/won't work. Any suggestions about other fish are always welcomed.

The gt will outgrow the 55.. Im not too sure how big texas get but I have seen a few 10" males so i guess they get too big too.. I think the jack dempsey will be a better choice since they rarely get bigger then 10"....

Do you Have the Tank Set up yet and if you do how long has it been set up
The tank was setted up just yesterday, I will take my time to cycle it I won't rush anything. I just want to make my head straight with what fish I am going to get, do my final research, then decoration (plants, rocks, wood etc), have the tank fully cycled and then get any fish i am going to choose. I will also use a filter I had on another 55 gallon (which I overfiltered and it is not necessary anymore) so that will make the procedure faster I believe.

Thanks for your help. I actually thought a gt would be fine, glad I asked :)
well i would do a Few salvini Cichlids and a few Fire Mouths or the salvini cichlids with a Jack
That is a nice idea, I had forgotten about salvini. Thank you.

Any other ideas and opinions are welcomed. I would like to hear about flowerhorns too, if they need bigger tank or it will be ok.

flower horns need a 75 or bigger i wouldnt do anything less then a 90 gallon my self for a flower horn and instead of gravel get pool filter sand. It is great doesnt get into your filters and it is easy to clean it took me 2 hrs to do three tanks(125 gallon, a 75 gallon and a 29 gallon) but i had to take out old gravel first. You could also go with a fish called ( LYONSI CICHLID ) It is a Endagered fish and a beautiful looking fish they get like 10 in male max out.

This Link is to a guy that has them and they are a breeding pair so you can see what they look like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuseuxwDcx0

x2 with firemouths and maybe some convicts too
How about a convict, 2 firemouths and a salvini?

Stunning fish! I am going to look into it. I also use pool filter sand to most of my tanks, I prefer it from gravel for the look and how easier the cleaning is as you mentioned. Thanks for all your help!
