Ok as I stated in a previous post I am considering taking back my Marineland C-530 and replacing it with an FX5. My question is that I have a designs by nature slimline background coming in on Wednesday and I am wondering since it appears the intake on the FX5 must be used with the suction cups, how do you guys place it in a tank with a 3d background. I would prefer stems in front so I dont lose any surface area.

i had the same slimline background with a fx5. in my case, no suction cups didnt matter. the intake stayed firmly against the background. if yours doesnt, you could always get a plastic hook and pierce the background and stabilize the intake that way

I have both on multiple tanks. Put the intake in front of the BG without the suction cups, so long as you use the hardware the hoses snap into going over the tanks edge, you don't have to use the suction cups. If you don't want to see the intake, angle the BG when installing it and put the intake directly behind it, you won't lose that much area. Make sure to drill a hole(s) in the BG if you put the intake behind it.

Thanks thats what I need to know!

You bet! Post a thread and lets help you design this thing. A few of of may have some ideas that could help you plan things out better/not learn the hard way ;)

I keep mine behind the background without cups. No problem at all the background will keep it in place. Just make sure your outlet is on the front side of the background

Thanks man. It is an established tank the it is most of the way set up...the only change I am considering is moving my lace rock to the corners and giving my Haps/Peacocks more swimming area in front..lol

Cool, sounds interesting. I still want pics when it's set up though! Let me know your thoughts on the slimline when you get it if you don't mind. I have all deluxe models from DBN that are pretty thick. I just picked up my first slimeline for the next tank project and have yet to form an opinion.

Oh no...are they bad? Matt sent me a pic of it before it shipped. I was mostly sold on the fact it can be installed in an established tank. Thats the only reason I am considering changing my rock work since I have to take it out anyway....this is what it looks like now.....
