Bottom Feeder for aggresive CAs and SAs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a pictus for a while.... til he was harassed to death by my JD....

I kept pictus with my O's and they made out fine. My FH killed 3 when I first introduced him to their home (they had been there for about a month before I introduced him). He would grab their tails and shake them like a dog with a chew toy.
Raph's have been great. I have a striped and a spotted in with my FH now (they were in there with the pictus as well) and he doesn't bother them. I might add a couple more since they seem to be the only thing he doesn't try to kill.
Good luck!

You could have a red tail catfish but then again when hes done cleaning up the bottom he would clean up your grow outs as well! Which personally i think oscars could be good feeders ;). A more serious note. I keep Clown loaches with all my large Cichlids and the only one that ever killed them was my green istalntum. You can also Get some Robertsoni which are south american sand sifters!.

i want to add some but getting a 12" argentea so it would have to be big enough not to be dinner, 3" clown loaches would be ideal but i think too small

Plecos are extremely tough fish and they would be great for your cichlids.
Some other options are.
Tsn
rtc ( it might eat everything though )
giraffe cat
Bichirs ( large species )
large sterlet
Ray
eels ( long fin but rare )
But all of these fish would need large tanks 500+ gallons ( even the fish right now would need a 100 gallon tank )

I'm wondering what size tank you're looking to put them in once they're grown out, which won't take too long. I agree with and second the raphael catfish. They don't get super huge as I think they max out around 8" or so. Mine does quite well with my stock but it hides a lot though. I think the senegal bicher would be a good idea but make sure the bicher is big enough to not fit in the oscar's mouth or it will be gone. Also provide the bicher with some small spaces to hide and escape the others if it needs too. I think picking between a couple raphael cats, a couple bichers, or a group of loaches would be your best bet with the stocklist you have and the size of tank you have. Like Gruff said too, be careful how much you're feeding. That will help the problem in itself to cut back a little on food and giving them what they can handle. Good luck!

The tank they are going into is a 150 gal, that I am going to stock after I put the Oscar and the Jack Dempsey in it, that is if all works out the way I planned.

Yeah, in my 150T I have a Flower Horn, a striped Raphael, a spotted Raphael, and a clown Pleco. The Raph's come out a lot more now that they are use to the tank and know where the hiding places are. They are much more active at night, but when i'm feeding the FH they will come out and grab some of the scraps before going back to their hiding places.

Yes but does he clean up immediately after feeding?
