Enlight of TBs recent thread on the so called banning of Leo exports, I was curious as to where people stood on Leos and BDs. Whether they are a seperate species or if BDs are just a dressed up Leo. I know this has been talked about before but wanted to see where people stood these days and if maybe there was some newer data/articles out there I could read. Plus BD variant is more readily available as is P14s. Pesonally I believe they are of the same species (Leo, BD) and I also prefer a well spotted, symmetrical classic is more attractive than an over spotted, hodge podged, messy BD. (pesonal taste). Do people consider a Leo/BD mix a hybrid or not?

Couldn't agree with you more Shadow.

BD's are just a pattern recognized only in the pet trade within the species P. leopoldi. Technically, there is no such thing as a cross/hybrid BD x leo since it's the same species. You can have a parent of each, but they are both leopoldi parents, so you have leopoldi offspring.

nope its the same type of fish! its not a matter of where people stand its a fact of life leopoldi is bd and bd is leopoldi. black diamond was just a name of real nice wild caught rays used by exporters and fisherman! this bdxleo stuff drives me nuts it absolutley is retarded i have even seen people selling wild caught bd x leo ???

the problem now is that everybody is trying to hype up their captive bred rays and leos by giving them the wildcaught exporter name black diamond any way they can.its not going to help sell your ray? bdxleo all that means is leoxleo big deal your ray looks like a low quality leo even if its mixed with the same type of rays species black diamond is a name for wild caught rays given by the exporters. my buddie has some normal classic style leos they produce pups most of which are regular quality but he did have one pup that could easily pass as a black diamond! but is it??? this is where it gets me too. because this ray could and does posses bds qualitys but is a bd just a grade of ray or a name? personal opinion i guess but i do beleive they are the same fish just look a bit different down stream

i used the term bd leo to desribe my pups as the male (my only male) is a very nice w/c black diamond ray and he breeds with my 2 c/b classic leos.that is my definition of bd/leo.in the end they are all leo's as mentioned.my male has impregnated pure bd female and those pups i call black diamonds.unfortunately, the term bd is used very loosely (by the first guy to complain about it i might add) and causes people to question it. best bet is to ask for parent pics if it concerns you. bottom line , you have to like the ray, then you can call it anything you like!

:) Like the above statement. :)

I guess it sounds more expensive to call them BD than to rate them as AAA:D

I know everyone thinks that bds and leos are the same but has there been any research on it yet?

Great ? and one I myself have been trying to come with the words to ask, these are my fav. rays and one that I want to get someday but with all the differant names I'm not sure whats what, they cost way to much to get something and not be sure what you payed for..............

I agree every bit of the way....

Kind of what I was hoping for, someone to post a link or article of some type of research/data.
