Leos vs BDs Hybrid or Not?

"Crossing" a male BD with a normal leo female makes a huge diffence.Lode´s pups are living proof of this!

couldnt agree more about makeing a huge difference...from my own exsperience pups from a bd male with a classic female makes a huge difference than a classic male...thats why i sold a classic males as didn't want there pups anymore.

I also believe Bd is just a leo varient

anders what would explain pairs of normal leos producing bd grade pups?

Pretty simple. They dont.

You can be lucky and get a very nice leo pup with lots of spots and decent disc spotting. But it will never have belly spotting or the same degree of white and black (and disc spotting).

they are the same ray bdxleo is leoxleo so how can it be hybrid?

Its not.

If you had spent two seconds reading my post and maybe think for just a second, you would see that I compare BD/leo to geophagus altifons. They vary greatly in color depending on the river they are caught in. They are not 100% genetically identical, but still enough to be considered the same species……

,im an avid fisherman anders i know of studies our government has done on fish, in different regions of our country.rainbow trout in british columbia get twice the size and look alot nicer than they do in alberta.but they are 100% the same fish genetically and 1200km away in complete different bodies of non connected waters?

I have been fishing for the past 20 years myself. And that relates to this how?

Do you know the species called brown trout? They were introduced to the rivers of New Zealand from Europe. Here they get more than twice the size they do in Europe. Why? Better access too food… Pretty simple stuff… No genetics.

Same species, different geographical distribution, minor differences in the gene pools due to mutation and natural selection, further isolation may lead to two different species. Just my theory.

Interesting discussion:), heard it all many times before and probably will again:D.
My regular leo´s got belly spots as well and they are F1, both parents are pure leo´s. All with pure white spots so according to some messurements, they must be BD??.
To me the BD fever is crazy, price does not equal quality (in my personal oppinion). Sure some BD´s look stunning, but alot of them looks like crap (again in my personal oppinion).
I want rays with somehow symmetric patterns and most BD´s doesnt fit that description. The ones that does is very expensive, thats why I rather take a classic leo or a p14 if the quality is ok.
Most species have minor differences from location to location, some think its the same while other will claim they are different species. But what do we know untill every specie has been descripet?. Some will claim motoro, marbled motoro and pearls are the same specie, same goes for leo and BD etc.

I do not believe you can get BD pups from breeding leoxleo, never seen it!, sure you can get bigger spots for example if thats your goal. But then its should be possible to breed classic leo´s from BDxBD and thats not the case. Since BD is caught in Sao felix, it seems as its a geographical variant of leo that has evolved in this area.

Could you take a picture of the belly spotting?

Because, when I say belley spotting I mean....

Got a ? what does the P stand for in P-13, P-14 also what makes one more $$ then others????

P=Potamotrygon which is the scientific name given to this group of rays. As for as money its what is the rarest and in the biggest demand.
