Moving with all my tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm looking at moving 126 tanks for the 2nd time in 3 years. I reduced my stock and drained a few dozen tanks. These will be set up at the new place 265 miles away and readied for the fish. Once the fish are moved, the remaining tanks will be drained and moved. I have an insulated and aerated fish transporter for moving the specimens. It trailer mounted and a DC to AC converter powers the aerator and heater during the drive. Smaller fish will ride in the back of the truck in coolers.

Man and I was stressing out from my tanks . I wish you the best on your move and wish you were here for my move lol. ALOHA

Don't stress out over it. I moved 26 tanks just 3 years ago when I moved to my house. The advice I'm about to give you will give others a heartattack. The day of the move, I woke up early and put all the fish in bags just like I was shipping them. I boxed them up, then drained the tanks. I left the gravel in them, with just a little water. If the tanks were too heavy, I took everything out. When I moved, I set up all the tanks and started filling them as fast as possible. A garden hose worked well. Fill buckets with hot water and dump in the tanks to get the temp adjusted as fast as possible. Float the bags for 30 minutes, then add to the tanks. Load those suckers up with chemicals and you'll be fine. Don't worry about beneficial bacteria or all that other "mumbo jumbo". Its an easy process, don't let it give you a head ache. All fish are a lot more durable than you think. If people can ship them in boxes for days at a time, moving them 1 day won't kill them. I never lost a fish doing what I did...I did 15 discus, 2 flowerhorns, 30 rams, MANY tetras, africans, SA cichlids, CA cichlids, and a whole bunch more. Good luck with your move!

I moved 16 tanks ranging from 20gal-310gal.

My advice:
Take stock and only move what you really want and are going to keep. get rid of the rest.

I bought large plastic trash cans and moved fish into them 2 weeks before move and attached filters to them. Add large diameter PVC so fish feel secure. I mixed and matched fish. Attach as many of you filter as you can to keep them alive.

Remove sand as early as possible. Wash it properly and store properly so that when you get to the new house it is ready to go immediately.

I drained the 'empty' tanks the night before the move and keep rocks and wood moist until you are at your new place.

Prepare one or 2 of your biggest tanks or as many as you need to hold all your fish. Dont worry about over crowding. Make dividers PVC hide outs.

Set up each tank at your leisure and until it is 'perfect' for you. Only them replace fish.

MOVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN PRIOR TO MOVING DAY. ESPECIALLY THE FISH!!!

Hope that helps.

Thanks MFKeepers for all the advice. Really appreciate it and the new place will have enough space for an upgrade YES!!!
