Water changes on a 125G Tank - Need some advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the tank is in the basement like mine are. I use a pump to move the water outside. When I clean the gravel I have the dirty water go into a big container then the pump take it out of there and pushes it outside.

i yous a long siphon cause dumping buckets sucks, its a real pain and i think they stop making python siphons.

If you don't want to spring for the python, just get a good 3/4" hose from a hardware store. Siphon the tank out the window or through a door, then attach the hose to a nearby sink and fill with water the same temp. You don't waste tons of water this way like you do with a python and it costs a whole heck of a lot less. I now use a pump attached to the hose that I just drop in the tank instead of siphoning and it speeds everything up even more.

Aqueon makes a python style water changer / gravel vac as well. They keep them in stock at petsmart and petco just to name a few big chains, so it will be much easier to add to your x-mas list. I picked one up a while back and haven't looked back at the buckets since.

Also, 2 heaters isn't a bad thing, I run 2 on my 125 just in case one dies and I am gone or don't notice right away.

Just added it to my Christmas list, thanks for your input. What heaters are you using on your 125?

I actually use Aqueon (2x 200w) heaters as well, nothing special but they get the job done, not sure if they are the best, but they keep my tank to the temp. I set it to no problem.

I had a fluval glass heater in my original Oscar tank but I kept reading about how rough Oscars were with deco and equipment (and they are), so I grabed the Aqueon heaters because when I went to the store they seemed fairly well constructed and didn't cost a fortune. They so far (around a year) have stood up to the test; knocked off the glass and thrashed around they are still running strong.

Thanks for the tip on the dechlor! What heater do you think I should go with ?SINCE THEY all EVENTUALLY GIVE OUT.....topfin they are guareteed for life. keep the receit ,you can get em at petsmart
