how many fancy goldfish can i put in a 125g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The typical spacing (per koiphen.com) is 30-35 gallons per goldfish. So 5-6 would be a good number if you are thinking fancy. If you are thinking fancy comets, or even regular comets, go with 4.

I keep several different types of goldfish with my koi in my indoor tank, and all do well- The only ones that did not do well were black moors.. They for some reason got eaten by my koi.. They however make wonderful tank fish, as well as pearl scale goldfish, but those are known to have a lot of health issues.

It is true that goldfish/koi do not have stomachs.. they do however have an anterior receptive sack, which allows them to hold food for a small amount of time.. it's about the size of their eye, so you could think of it as a small stomach.

If I had a 125 that was empty, and I was stuck as to what to do, I would do a planted tank with tetras, angelfish, snails, and bettas. I currently have a 30 gallon with that, and it's really fun to watch. I am looking to upgrade them to my 72 bowfront within a week or so.

But, in all, you could do quite a few things in this tank.. you could get a large fish, and keep in it.. such as a flowerhorn, or a fahaka puffer. Great personalities, and colorful as well.

i just want something real low maintenance. but how about this. 4 adult large fancy goldfish and one florida gar? people keep common goldies with floridas and they only eat what fits in their mouth. might look like a cool setup?

i would get cichlids i mean with all that filteration you would not have to do a lot of cleaning my 75 gallon is a little overstocked and it only has 1 empor 400 filtering it you could get a pair of oscars and 1-3 large catfish or a pair of pearsei cichlid and 1-3 large catfish or any other large american cichlid pair would be a lot better than goldfish but if you do want fancy goldfish you can have 10 but if you had 6-7 it would be a lot less work but i prefer cichlids do not waste a big tank on big orange fish with no personallity cichlids have tons of personallaty most american cichlids will eat out of your hand and they are fairly cheap most large 8-14 inch cichlids cost around 40-80 dollors well exept rare ones like flowerhorn and red texes cichlid ect i would do some reserch on american cichlids if i were you just check them out

Not all goldfish are orange.. lol.. but many are.

Here's a group of goldfish that I own.. these are specially bred from a koi farm. I got to "test" them out to see what people might think of them. These are not your typical comets. :grinno:
