Gymnogeophagus balzanii tank

Fry? She should have released by now

She held for 8 days and never released the fry. I got very worried...so I stripped the fry...here is a video of her in the recovery tank. She stayed with the fry the whole time...very moving...

Anyway, I have about 60-80 fry left. They are smaller than Geo fry and grow very slowly, but they are eating well on live bbs. Ready for your half?

If you can catch more this time, bring some females! She's the only one in the whole group from March.

Very cool, if I took any now they would just starve while I was gone, be back the 12th, will have some more girls for you. Ken

Very cool! Put me down for 6. ;)

Sure thing Ryan. It's safer to spread the babies around :)

Great! I'm convinced there should be no more than one male in a 4' tank.

wow, gymnos are tiny fry, I'd like to have any in my fish room, but it never was in Central America

You should try to get on one of Ken's tours ;)

A little update - fry are eating and growing well :) They are almost 1/2" now and already showing the taller body profile compared to my other Geo fry.

I am getting ready to try them again. I lost my last group a few years back. What temp are you keeping that tank on? My last batch got Ick and thats why I lost them. I was thinking this time around I would keep a heater in the tank set at 74 year round raising it during the breeding season which I'm guessing is during Nov-Jan? is that correct? I didn't have a heater my last time around and I think the water may have gotten too cold or fluctuated too much.

The parents were in an unheated tank until a couple of months ago, when I raised temp to the low 80s. It's summer now in Uruguay and I think raising temp at this time of the year might have triggered spawning. The fry tank is at the same temp and I plan to lower it in the spring.

My very favorite gymno! Hoping to add some with my red ceibals one day! Nice fish!

Thanks. They should do well together :)
