Cichlasoma Festae versus Mayan Cichlid

You can get the Mayans to color up nicely if you work at it, but nothing like the Festaes. A female Festae in breeding colors looks like she's gone nuclear, no Mayans can compare to that. I do think young Mayans are tougher than young Festaes, but the Festaes catch up in that department when they get big.

Festae everyday !!

im gonna have to go with mayan. gotta back up fish collection. plus i love my mayan. he tries to bite me when i clean his tank.

I understand why these two fish get compared (same common name and people often buy a "red terror" thinking it's a festae when it's not), but I really think they're each nice in their own right. From an evolutionary standpoint, I think mayans are really impressive--can adapt to a wide range of environments from freshwater rivers to full marine conditions.

Mayan's are just as hardy or maybe even hardier than a convict cichlid.
That is why I like them. I have seen some mayans that lived over 15 years! It was at a restaurant. They said the fish lived there since it opened.
I have seen mayan's that had more personality than an oscar. Imagine that..?
Here is an awesome video of a mayan.
