Cichlasoma Festae versus Mayan Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why does everyone brag up the female festae a male in mating colors is a great looking fish too. I know the female seems to look good all the time though.

Agreed, ive had many festae pair, and always loved the males coloration more
imo mayans dont even compair personality wise.

The gold body with bright red fins with blue and red speckles from body to tail. Yikes i shouldnt keep talkn dirty like this..what if my wife reads the post ;)

I think these threads are a little pointless for a few reason.

1- Everyone has their opinion on the topic which makes it pointless.
2- both fish are awesome in their own ways.
Festae- have great color but lack personality except a few here and there.
Mayan- from my experience they have much better personality and have their own category of nice colors but its not often you see those nice colors because they are looked over just because people talk up the festae so much.
3- Festae have insane color that i think is surpassed by that of the the salvini but salviniare so common the festae gets the attention but the festae are becoming very common but thats not the point.
4- we have our reason why we like fish and dislike fish and people need to stop taking other like and dislikes of fish so seriously and just agree that all fish have their reasons for being liked and disliked.

For me i choose personality over color and having kept both festae and mayans I would choose the mayan due to the fact than my 6 inch mayan had 10x more personality than my 8 inch female festae. I like both fish but look for more in a fish than just nice reds, yellows, and whatever color. Personality does it for me but might not do it for others

Only reason people resent Mayans is because of the scams that have been going on for years now. People want a Festae to follow the trend of what's "cool" right now and they get sent a Mayan by an irresponsible vendor, so the poor Mayan ends up getting all the blame. Both are amazing fish in their own way and it's kinda unfair that one gets all the hate because its not as "beautiful" as the other. They don't even come from the same places and are hardly related, as far as I know Festae are more related to Umbee than anything else.

If there were no scammers out there, people would be able to appreciate and enjoy both species for what they are.

Anyway, I'm sure the Festae craze will come to an end really soon with all those new breeders popping up everywhere. Same happened with Umbee a couple of years ago when it was thought most of them were females and the "rare" males would go for hundreds of dollars, I think someone here sold a large male for $2,000 back in the day, now you can get one for $50 lol

I have a 10" mayan that I loved dearly and I also have 4 baby festae. Both are great fish!

way to bring back a dead thread :irked: dont care about color:ROFL:

Whats so funny about not caring about color? I have always been in to patterns over colors. Tiger Dats, Livingstonii's Jags, Cubans, tiger shovelnose etc. The festae is stunning but It does not do a lot for me. If I could acquire one easily I would however there are plenty of fish I would pick out first.
