Best place to get an electric blue jack dempsey?

I would love to have one of these guys, but when they come up for sale where I live they are usually overpriced and mediocre in appearance. Also, I heard that if you don't buy one from a reputable breeder it will have health problems and a short lifespan. Where do you guys suggest getting a $10-$20 healthy electric blue jack dempsey juvenile? If I find ones that are to my standards, I am willing to go out of my price range.

Check the marketplace. You will find various vendors and members near you that will sell you EBJD from juveniles to adults. Price will vary from person to person, but there are some nice EBJD available. I just read a thread in the Marketplace of someone selling a bonded pair. Depending on where they are, shipping may be required though.

I would love one myself. There is a store near my home that sells them. $50 for approximately 1 inchers & $25 for small, extremely small, ones. The little ones would never make it in my tank & I'm not paying $50.

Look around, You never know where you're going to find your best option at. Your best bet might be the internet, although, my EBJD is a LFS one and he looks great! So you never know what you will get, I'm sure you will find one that works for you.

In my opinion no were. I personally do not think these fish should be bred. A huge percentage of these die before they reach 4 inches. Of the ones that do make it most have deformities and still do not live nearly as long as a normal jack would.

Sorry to be a downer, but if you every buy some you will see exactly why I'm saying this.

That's not true, I have one that is roughly 8.5" possibly bigger that is quite healthy. These should be bred by responsible breeders only. It's too bad you're probably far away, I'm selling mine and his mate. But I don't ship.

I dont agree with your information. If they are from a good source they can be great looking and pretty durable. I just sent some two day shipping at at 1 inch old back east and they made fine. I also too have a 8 inch that just as hardy as regular jacks.

Also raised quite a few with no issue's some I admit had problems but those where culled liked any breeder thats credible would do.

I have 1 inchers avalible.

From what i hear these days they're more stable than they were a few years ago . I got mine through the marketplace here and he's gone from about an inch to 4 inches
without a hitch .

Would you consider the cull rate the same as any other fry?

I'm not going to argue with anyone and everyone can keep and breed what they like. There's nothing wrong with it. But I do not see any point in breeding something that a huge percentage die or have deformities just so I can have one good looking one.

Like I said, keep what you like and enjoy them. I will never own another one though.

I do have a nice group of juveniles that were bred by me. I raised them the way I would with other hardy type of cichlid so the weak ones were all gone. They range from 1" to 2". Price is from $8-$15 each. Let me know if you're interested. I planned to raise these ones to adulthood and monitor their growth but since I just got two new batches from my breeding pairs, I can let some of these go.
