You could try some Dutch Rams or German Blue Rams. The barbs are great fish but are crazy fin nippers. So you need something that isn't going to bully them but at the same time can hold it's own against them when needed. I think the rams would be a nice match.

if you add 2-3 tiger barbs into a tank with 3 tiger barbs in it they will imidetley school i have 5 tiger barbs i had 2 then i added 3 it only took a few minutes for the new ones to start schooling as an oscar in a 50 gallon tank you could do it but it would be happier in a 75 gallon if you get a 75 gallon tank for the oscar you could add 1-2 medium sized catfish but if you get a 50 gallon for the oscar he will have to be a single fish red tailed sharks will probably get eaten by a oscar but red tailed shark can live with tiger barbs if you are doing a community tank for the 50 gallon i would get 8 tiger barbs and 1 red tailed shark and maybe 2 .3 spot gouramis and 2 blood parrot would be nice and you could also get 4 giant danios if you keep up with the maintenance this stock would work you could also try a single American cichlid like 1 Oscar or 1 jack Dempsey or 1 green terror but you can only put 1 large American cichlid in a 50 gallon tank good luck
If you have 3 barbs then add another 2 or 4, keeping it at an odd number and you should have the barbs just playing with each other more then the other fish. Rams are pretty but can also fight back a bit if needed which is the reason I suggested it. I was just at my LFS and they had rams and barbs in the same tank. They seemed to do well but every fish is different.
