Setting up my new 120 Gallon Pic heavy......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i bet your siphon is at the tank level and not down below. you can add a siphon break where the pipe goes into the tank water by drilling a hole in your overflow pipe and pressing in a piece of tubing, either 1/4" or i used 3/8" on my reef overflow, just make sure the tube is above you water level and it shoud stop all siphoning.
do you hear "slurpping" sounds? that would be the pipe you have trouble with.

at the top of my 1.5" dual overflow pipes you can see where i glued in 3/4" lines to act as a siphon breaks when i was setting my tank this time. sorry i don't know how to "draw on a pic" or i would have added arrows or something :)

prety scary stuff.... real plumbers just laugh at me :banhim: on the upside the city is safe, it's 7 miles away:ROFL:

I have to admit that I love the plumbing as much as the fish as well.

Looks great, it makes me wish i had room to start a new project. I really like the 3D background, I definitely want to do one on my next setup. If I went through all the tanks one-by-one I think my wife might kill me...

What's the light you're using on that 120?

I'm using an old Coralife compact florescent light. All my tanks are used and all of them were old salt water tanks. Part of the deal of buying used equipment is making it work for your needs. I have a S*** Ton of Coralife units. I've changed out ballasts and bulbs and they are expensive but when the units are basically free (comes with the used tank) then it's a deal. I like them but would look into LED's if I ever would buy new...

I take it all in baby steps. It cost $100 or so a tank to background and it looks great. 1 at a time :) Not too much impact on the budget.

All my tanks have 3D backgrounds on them now, 4 total in the house (I sold one, and on a side note they really up the resale value of a setup!) including my 225. They get easier every time I install them, especially the new flexible backgrounds from DBN.
I had fun plumbing my 225, did a modified herbie to fit in a skinny overflow and there's 0 noise from water splashing, just a low hum from the pump.

if all that is good then i would remove the downgoing 90 (above the sump) and put in a T above you filter socks (or if it's glued and you don't want to do that you could just drill a 1/2" hole on the top of the 90)

Replaced the 90 going into my filter sock with a T and the surge issue has stopped :) Thanks for the tip!

If you're getting any splashing noise out of the top of the tee you can put a short length of pipe out the top with a cap with a hole in it like a durso on the bottom to muffle it. I did that on one of my tanks and it made a ton of difference on noise.
