spinner shark?

- on a side note, can't wait to get my new baitcaster ;D

Not a spinner, though several were caught today. Spinners look like black tips except that black tips to NOT have a black tipped anal fin like a spinner does.

Shark IDs are hard, even for the common species and this is a very common species. Im still learning but the big pectoral fins give this one away.

I'm getting the bass pro shops extreme combo in a 7:1:1 for spinner baits, 7' MH rod, I can't wait

Also considering buying myself a present, never owned an Abu Garcia but the 5500c3 is down to $90 and right now if you order it on Bass pro website you get a free abu hoodie, it'd be a reel i used for some cranking freshwater but mostly as a salty setup

Close, a sand bar shark.

These guys have a nice rig. To get the shark up they have a pulley system that latches onto the rail of the pier, then the use a rope with a ring to lasso the shark around the pecs. To keep the ring from slipping, the use a really stout zip tie that holds the loop of the lasso open until its around the shark and a good jerk is given for the ring to slip over the zip tie and tighten the loop on the shark. To release the shark, a second smaller rope with a clip on it is attached the ring and the shark is lassoed around the tail and slowly lowered into the water. Once in the water, the smaller rope attached to the ring is pulled which loosens the lasso and the shark swims free. These guys have it down to a science and its a real pleasure watching them work. From rigging the bonita (which is an art in its self) to deploy baits, to fighting the fish and finally to the "gaff", tag, and release.

You can see the tag in the first two pics.

Consider the 6500c3. They sell for $89 standard retail, have a bait clicker that the 5500c3 doesn't and more line capacity :) Other rig your getting sounds nice! Enjoy!

JD - I bet that is a sight! Really neat. I had a bite off down in the keys and afterwards I wondered how I would have ever landed it...

does the bait clicker work well? those are the two models i'm considering, my only thought was the higher line capacity could result in deeper backlashes

I have NEVER backlashed my 6500's. The clicker is a must for me. Anything without it is useless (to me). You can leave the spool engaged and let the fish run with the bait and a turn of the handle to lock the spool and a good hookset and FISH ON! the clicker allows the line to stay put and only a fish can pull it out, the current will not pull out any line. You dont have any option but freespool and locked spool with the 5500. Really limits your options. There are magnetic casting controls to eliminate backlash entirely, though with some practice isnt even necessary.

oh man so you're saying that instead of having to mess with my drag I can just use the bait clicker and when something takes the bait i just turn the handle set the hook and my drag is already set the way i want it? thats awesome glad I said something on here about it. Any recommendations on a rod to pair it with? there's a guy selling a 7' Veritas (MH) on craigslist for $70 but I didn't know if I should go with a different style rod since it will mostly be a beach rig used for flounder/trout

You got a pic of that kayak?
