cant help you sex it but it looks great just got one and its got an attitude problem with everyone same size and smaller. one of my all time favorites.

Definitely male. The lack of a black spot in the dorsal fin... as females have a black spot on theirs. If that thing is alone in a 75g, you may be lucky to get it to accept a female, otherwise that's too small of a tank as it's not unheard of for Carpintis to be a little off the chain in the psycho department. I have one that fears nothing in my tank... it's the smallest fish in my tank. It challenges all comers.

A lot of carpintis females display no black in there dorsal fin. I have only had a couple that ever did and numerous that showed zero black.

Thats is definately a male. Females never develope the large head shape like that. Best to vent them to be sure though. If several are in a tank generally only one male will look like that as the others will stay subdominate in the hopes of not getting beat silly.

Even with all the guesses, its not 100%. Especially Carpintis, its quite difficult, my guess if MALE.

i hope this is true as i've got seven escondido's and they are about two and a half inches long and none of them have and black in the dorsal fin, hopefully i havn'y got seven males :)

Very unlikely that you have seven males. Escondido's females seldom show much black in there dorsals, a few will, some do only when spawning, and a lot never do.

I agree 100%, two of my female escondido grow out's have little to no color at all in the dorsal. That is why I mentioned the finnage shape as well. The elongated dorsal and anal fin have been (for me at least) a much better way of sexing and small sizes 3"+. The females fins are shorter and more rounded at the tip.
