Various pellets...like hikari carnivore sinking, black worms, various frozen foods and tilapia is good also. I never tried tilpia yet. Seems that i cant find any at my local market
When I got mine at 4inches or so, I gave blood worms, but that didnt seem to work, they would fly all over and it didnt seem like she even payed attention to them so I got some sinking shrimp pellets and I never saw her eat them but she lived so I am sure she did lol I only did that for a little while and then I switched to tilapia, and she loves that more than anything. I still toss the shrimp pellets in and she is 10inches now, but I think my brown knife eats them not her.

Try looking in the frozen section, they come in big ass bags for like 10$. I tried a few other kinds of fish, she wont eat Swai, or Pollock but will take Catfish if in super small chunks because its hard to break off.
You might even be able to find the whole skin/scale/eye on tilapia as well.
My small ones get meal worms (i breed them myself so they are fat and full off veggies) alternated with chopped shrimp, smelt and talapia every other feeding and they are growing very quickly.
I highly recommend meal worms and when larger superworms as a feeder, i find the color, scales and fin's on them have greatly improved since making meal worse part of a staple, i've noticed similar results feeding them too the snakeheads as well.
It's enough of a difference that i've now set up many breeding bins for meal worms for smaller fish and have started breeding superworm's for larger fish as well! Plus meal worms are ridiculously easy too breed, superworms are a bit more tricky, but anyone with a bucket can breed meal worms and have an ample supply free healthy food source!
You do mealies too! Lol weird I thought I was the only one who tossed bugs in!
I started doing that after one of those big outside roaches came in under the door, thing was like 3 inches long and somehow it fell in the tank and my Del went crazy over it and loved it!
Also I breed meal worms for my geckos and the extra beetles are interesting to toss in on occasion.
