I have a black ghost knife fish, an angelfish, 5 bolivian rams, and a whiptail catfish. I would really like to add an earth eater but I'm not sure if it would be compatible with my other fish. Any thoughts?
Geos would be fine.
I'm sorry. I should've specified. Geophagus Jurupari is what I'm interested in.
^ i agreeDon't be sorry at all!It is great to see people ask before they buy! Well jurupari is part of the "geo family" as they are often lumped into but are actually part of the Satanoperca genus (my favorite genus) and can reach an adult size of 10". That large although not commonly seen at that size is for sure possible. I would not suggest adding one to a 55 gallon. For the most part, all "geos" are a social species and do best in groups. When I say "do best in groups" I mean they don't end up the dark colored fish hiding in the corner that often times happens when kept alone.
For a 55 gallon your best bet would be one of the Gymnogeophagus species but not with your current stock and gymno species need a cool down period every year and your rams will not survive a cool down period. I would suggest you do a little homework on the Guianacara genus, most larger males end up around the 6" mark and rarely exceed it. I have not done much homework on them so I am not sure on temp, group size etc.. but that may get you going to see if you find something you like.
