Looking for some new Tank Mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it wasn't a mated pair (which makes them more aggressive) i would agree on a firemouth, but i'm hesitant to recommend it with a pair of cons. of the others a dempsey isn't a bad idea very similar in aggression to the convicts

Fot its size a convict is one of the most agressive cichlids out there. Now if you have a mated pair they are hell on wheels. I had a 5 inch male that would stand up to a 10 inch Midas. I would get a large agressive cichlid like a red devil to keep with the convicts.

Thanks for all the replies.
The convicts havent mated in the 6months that i have had them, but they did for the previous owner.

Dont really want to spend the money on new fish if they are just going to get beat up, so I might just leave it be for now.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DID you say RD!??????!!!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!! He has a 50 gal tank. 1 RD needs 70 gallons. He has a 50 gal with a pair of convicts. You are saying to add a RD on top of that????!???????????!!!!!!

maybe some texas cichlids
Texes get as big as a RD!!!!!! He has a pair of cons in a 50 gal tank. 1 T cichlid needs at least a 70 gallon tank. plus he already has a pair of cons in the 50 gal tank!!!!! NOT trying to offend you. Just did need to point that out.

Okay

I've see convict pairs take down a 12 inch oscar and back a 8 inch jag in a corner before. In a fight size doesnt always matter. As for your tank and having tankmates with them, you have a few options. A small pike would work fine like a bellycrawler or sveni pike. You could also think about some bichirs. Now your best bet with the convicts controling the lower and middle part of the tank while breeding you could think about some top swimming fish like a african butterfly fish. Depending on the dimensions of your tank you could get away with a green terror thats bigger than the convicts. I would leave the convicts with their babies when breeding and add fish later once removed. There are possible tankmates but must be chosen wisely.
