the reason why people say they and other cichlids need such large tanks is beacuse of the size of territory that they require. and Umbee are the largest growing of all american cichlid so the bigger the tank you have the better.

you will find differing information on different websites but to be honest with you, people here on MFK seem to suggest much larger tank sizes than what is really considered correct. and if you dont obey then you get flamed. so just a warning to you.

I watched the whole thing. I love your doviis!!!! i think I like umbees and doviis slightly more than Oscars. how do you maintain those tanks?!?!. I am struggling with a 30 gal a 40 gal a 65 gal and a 75 gal. WOW!!!!

trust me i have been flamed in the past for that. Now i do not overstock my tanks. The reason i used to think Oscars needed a 50 gallon tank was because. The pets smart people. My opinion has changed tough. i am still occasionally flamed for different reasons tough.

i have lerned a lot from the the desise experiences. Also why do you have to think so negatively about everything. i do not want to start a fight. So can you please not flame me. Anyway I was thinking about the future. like in 9 months i might try a bigger tank. I really wanted a other 70 gallon though. The only people keeping LARGE fish in smaller tanks than those that have had them suggest are:

a) those that have never kept them
b) those that have them in smaller tanks than more experienced keepers kept them in or suggest, trying to justify smaller tanks to themselves
c) those that are going to get them regardless and are too hard headed/selfish/know-it-all to follow other experienced keepers advice/suggestions and have to learn things the hard way
d) all of the above

This isnt 1920 where others havent gone out and experienced things so that we dont have to anymore. Most judge tank size for a fish by its size which is wrong. The smarter ones go crazy in too small of surroundings and thats why the tank recommendations are as big as they are.

I did not mean i was going to put any of these fish in a 70 gallon tank. i was going to put a RD in a 70 gallon if I get one. Come on!!!!
