This does not make any sense to my brain.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did not mean i was going to put any of these fish in a 70 gallon tank. i was going to put a RD in a 70 gallon if I get one. Come on!!!!

Im not saying this about you (troll?). Im saying it about those saying a 75 is fine, a 120 is fine. 99% of these people have never had them as adults, if had them ever so they dont have the experience with the fish in question to know what they are talking about.

Sanity plays a HUGE part in the larger bigger brained fish. Its why they become glass bangers. INSANITY.

Ever seen a glass banger at the zoo? Probably not. They have the appropriate living space.

Equate it to the sanity of someone in jail staying in an 8x4 solitary cell for yrs at a time. Think they are sane?

Oh misunderstanding I am terribly sorry.

the reason why people say they and other cichlids need such large tanks is beacuse of the size of territory that they require. and Umbee are the largest growing of all american cichlid so the bigger the tank you have the better.

you will find differing information on different websites but to be honest with you, people here on MFK seem to suggest much larger tank sizes than what is really considered correct. and if you dont obey then you get flamed. so just a warning to you.
trust me i have been flamed in the past for that. Now i do not overstock my tanks. The reason i used to think Oscars needed a 50 gallon tank was because. The pets smart people. My opinion has changed tough. i am still occasionally flamed for different reasons tough.

I think you are flamed for a few reasons. Im not baggin on im just helpin ya out a little.

1. pointless threads
2. Giving advice when you shouldnt be
3. lots of your post and threads come back to bite you in the ***
4. You say and do things that show your immaturity and lack of experience

You dont have to post everything your doing or wanna know about. I did this and i stopped. Learn on your own and if you cant find then ask questions. If you wanna keep large fish in a small tank and tell people about it then expect to get bagged on....

Oscaroo we all have to start somewhere, we get that you are new to the hobby and you have to learn by doing, but when I starting fishkeeping I didn´t even have the internet just had lots of fishkeeping books and one huge encyclopedia. I would read it all the time and I always knew lots about fish I hadn´t even kept.

If you want to be a mature and responsible fish keeper do the research on your own, there is a whole world full of information out there, cichlid-forum.com has a great species list for african and american cichlids. People may be annoyed by you because you seem to ask a lot of amateur questions and there is nothing wrong with that, youre new to fish keeping. all I can suggest is try to find the answer yourself and only post a question on here if you are really stuck or need reassuring. thats what I do.

lastly, there are tons of cichlids out there for you that can fit in your current tanks that offer all you could ask for, colour, size, aggressiveness, breeding potential. I have been tempted by umbee and dovii many many times but even with my 225 gallon tank I wouldnt feel comfortable having one, incase all hell breaks loose. I didnt get a tank larger than a 75gallon until this year and even so i only have things like RD, Salvini etc in my tank.

also I know I said that I grew up without internet, I´m not some old guy im only 21 its just the internet didn´t really catch on til I was 13ish in europe.

Oscaroo if you have any problem or questions you can always message me and I´ll help you out.

Thanks guys. I did research on this i was just rehearing because it did not make sense to me. thanks again!!!!

i was asking this question for if i ever get a BIG tank. why would i put a umbee in a 70 gallon tank? I love American cichlids!

Also its always good to post dimensions, for instance I have a 225 gallon tank, but its only 5 feet long. it is however 3 feet wide, which is an amazing advantage.
but you see how the number isnt just importrant? I had a 90gallon that was only 3 feet long, but 2 high and 2 wide.
