Best way to wash sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you all for the advice. I decided to go with filter sand, I priced it out at $9.99/50 lb, about double what play sand is around here but hopefully worth it in cleaning aspects. Thank you again!

Oh and while your stirring get a small chair, your back will thank you

I'd get somewhere around a pound a gallon.

Hello; I got some construction sand a bout 18 months ago to bed a drain pipe. It was $15.00 for 3/4 ton. I also sifted some to have particles to add to paint on some steps for traction. I could have gotten enough of a variety of different sized particles to use in many tanks had that been my intention. You would not have to get 3/4 ton, probably just a few buckets full for very little money. I got the sand from a local cement place.

Good choice.....It's well worth not doing all that work..

do you guys really go thru all that???? all i do is pour a 5 gallon bucket half full of playground sand, run water in it, pour the water off the top of the sand and repeat making sure to push the hose down to the bottom of the bucket to rinse thru all the sand. i do that 2-3 times per half bucket and that works great.

this is what I do and it works great

What are those layers in your tank made out of and how did you install it ? Looks very cool.

Thanks! It is corrugated plastic from lowes. Just cut out the top shape, then I used 2" strips for the side and backs and used silicone to attach the strips. I offset them from the glass and surrounded them with the sand. The plastic is hollow and it has a slightly floating buoyancy but easily kept down with the weight of sand alone. I will likely add another taller layer another time. The caves are for my 5" pictus since he out grew the PVC I had for him so... It was time for an overhaul lol.
