Is this a common pleco?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And Mavrick813: Yours is a Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps. Notice how yours has dark spots that produce more of a honeycomb-like pattern, whereas the OP's fish has a dark base color with light spots.

Ok, whats the common name for mine? Thanks for the info. Would it be considered rare or uncommon?

I don't know of any common names for them apart from "hi-fin" or "sailfin" (which are both interchangeable between these and gibbies). Most people would just call it a "jose" for short. I wouldn't call them rare or particularly uncommon, although they are less common than common plecos and maybe a bit less common than gibbies.

Petsmart sells them under the name "spotted hi-fin" they also are called goldspot and sometimes wrongly sold as leopard sailfin. They are less common than gibby's but readily available

I See! Wow, Good Eye. So, What would the Common Name of mine be? I was under the impression the LFS name would be Leopard Sailfin Pleco. Is that correct? I never seen any of the L### stuff until I joined MFK, and quite frankly it confuses the Bejeebus out of me...

It's a gibby

Also planet catfish says they top out @12" but mine is around 5 or 6 and 14"+

Yeah, PC isn't particularly acurate, and I think I remember hearing somewhere that they don't count the tail length. MsMassPoly has one that is well over 12" as well (I don't remember exactly how large she said hers was, though).

"Leopard Sailfin" is correct, but I prefer "gibby," as do most people on here.
