FITRATION SUGGESTIONS FOR A 300 GALLON AQUARIUM

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup that's a nice set of pbass. 10 is a lot! Good money stock there. :D

Most 200G+ tank owners will tell you that a sump is the way to go. I used to have only canisters (2 FX5's on my 210g), but a sump lets you put in so much more media and you can use a pump that's much, much stronger than any canister filter pump.

The only down side to having a sump only is that it just acts as a skimmer for the top of the water. All the craps will be stuck on the floor of your tank. That's why I have a sump for extra bio capacity, a strong powerhead to blow the turds away, and a FX5 in the other corner to catch them all. I think that way you have a good mix of top and bottom filtration and extra circulation/gas exchange in the tank too.

I use 2 fx5s(1 turbotwist 12x UV sterilizer) and a 55 gallon sump powered by a mag18 on my 240. Just gonna transfer my current filtration over to my 360 when I get it and possibly add another mag 18, the 360 will be drilled and have 1.5" bulkheads.

In my opinion I would go with a sump. No matter if you have a sump and canister and point it in whatever direction your going to have to clean it no matter what, regaurdless if its days, weeks, months etc etc,..... it needs to be cleaned. So IMO i would stick to a sump. You can have a sump that has enough power flow and cleaning filtration verses getting a sump and a canister$$$$$$. As far as keeping it clear a UV sterilizer and regurlar WC will do the job. Again this is my opinion and I do respect everyone elses

Thanks for all the great advice! I appreciate everyone taking the time to help out. I am going to try to go with acrylic for sure.

What kind of "canister filter with glass media" is that? That definitely looks to be getting the job done. Where did you purchase it?

Unit does not require a sump or filter sock. Polishes the water gin clear. Designed for high fish load. Turn the handle to backwash on water change day which lifts the glass and blows the crap out. My hands don't even get wet. No powerheads or UV on my system. Purchased thru wlimproducts. PM me if you need more info.

I have it on my 225g also. Stock: (4) big pbass, (1) big snook, and (4) severums.

When it comes to filtration Kendragon is the man. His cichla are proof in the pudding. I'll be going to him for filtration on my next few set ups for sure.

This is just the kind of filter I have in mind. I like easy maintance. Could you point me towards a link at wlimproducts to buy the same filter? I tried to PM you, but I don't have permission to yet. If you'd rather email me my email address is matt@lizardsofoz.com. Thanks a lot.
