Can a red eared slider live in a 55 gallon tank for life????

I spend hours each week maintaining my aquariums and the turtle tank. I wish the turtle had a better home.:shakehead

For the record... 8 inches is NOT almost full size...that's about half full size.... red ear sliders are some of the largest water turtles that are commonly available and routinely reach a shell diameter of 18 inches or more... It does take some time but they do get there. I wouldn't even bother with a glass tank for them, as someone else mentioned... checkout water land tubs....

If you take it out to let him roam the room for exercise I dont see a problem. I kept 2 painted turtles as a kid in a clear tote container with rocks water and sand, painted turtles get bigger than red ears, but mine also got to play in the backyard everyday, they always seemed happy to me and lived a long healthy life. For turtles I think a good diet proper heat and exercise are key. There not as lazy as some people think, just slow moving lol

Get him one of those plastic kiddie pools or a dig a hole and put a thick plastic tarp over it and fill . Also make sure to fence it in. I learned that the hard way. I built a temporary pond with some tarp and my cooter and RES got away after a couple months, we lived near the river so I think thats where they went.

general rule of thumb is 10 gallons per 1 inch of shell so you could probably get away with a 75 but a 90 would be ideal

A 75g and a 90g both have a footprint of 48x18" so how would the 90g be better?

The common size for male sliders is around 8 inches. Females can reach between 8-10 inches, and the RECORD size for a slider is just under 11.5 inches. Do not come in here throwing around absolute false information.

As for everyone else, back off the guy. He clearly has it housed poorly now, but he's taking steps to fix the problem.

That being said, a 75g is what's commonly recommended for a male RES, at 90 for a female. These are adequate for the turtle in question, depending on gender. Don't forget that without proper filtration, a tank this size just makes your job harder. So start thinking about a good size canister filter.

Not a single subspecies of C. picta gets larger than T. s. elegans. Only the Western painted, C. p. belli, gets approximately the same size, but usually stays smaller. I can't figure out where you people are getting your information...
