Can a red eared slider live in a 55 gallon tank for life????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The common size for male sliders is around 8 inches. Females can reach between 8-10 inches, and the RECORD size for a slider is just under 11.5 inches. Do not come in here throwing around absolute false information.

As for everyone else, back off the guy. He clearly has it housed poorly now, but he's taking steps to fix the problem.

That being said, a 75g is what's commonly recommended for a male RES, at 90 for a female. These are adequate for the turtle in question, depending on gender. Don't forget that without proper filtration, a tank this size just makes your job harder. So start thinking about a good size canister filter.

You must be talking length because that is a tiny size for an adult red ear slider.....

What the... how else do you measure turtles other than Straight Carapace Length? This is the only commonly accepted way to measure them. This is how they are measured by biologists, zoologists, and hobbyists for decades. How are you measuring that come to 18 inches on a slider? Circumference?

You guys are a bunch of bullying twats, the young guy is doing his best with a situation that he cant totally control,
he obviously lives with his parents and cant just buy the tank size he needs so lay off him.

Judging by some of the 'advice' you have all been giving him, you know s**t about turtle care.

Oscaroo dont pay any attention to the guys giving you grief here, google 'Austins turtle page' which is a proper turtle forum where people will give you decent advice without the abuse.
You do need a bigger tank so show your dad the advice/ caresheet for red eared sliders from austins page and he will hopefully get the tank you need.

ive kept ybs turtles (which are a similar turt to yours) with a diy above tank basking area so if you need any advice send me a pm,
cheers

I posted a link to that page for him a few posts ago. It's a pretty good resource for caring for turtles.
