hey guys!

i just purchased a jardini arowana from my lps. i haven't pick him/her up yet i have to finish setting my tank up.

i have a 55 gallon tank which will house the jardini alone. i know i will need a bigger tank in the future but i think i have about a year before i have to do so.

my questions are:

what ph would you guys recommend me housing him in?

currently the tank is at 7

what temperature should the jar be kept at?

i read jar should be between 75-85? i have the tank at 77 right now.

what sex is more desired?

i have only had experience with flowerhorns so far and i know males are more desired since males are the only one that will develop a nice kok.

any help/info would be awesome i have also read the stickies but maybe someone here has some more info that are not on there. thanks in advance.

the best would be keep around 6.5, temp should be at 80 to 82
for sex, i guess you can't tell much even if they are adult but they are aggressive though, so should keep with bottom dweller like rays, bichir etc

IMO you have at best 8 months with that small tank, maybe even less. Aro's grow extremely fast. At least 1.5"-3" a month. For Jardini's, its virtually impossible to sex unless you've seen them breed. And you must not know much about FH's then, because females with large kok's are more desirable than any male. Stable pH is best and 7 is just fine. Temps around 80-82 would be a little better. I keep mine at 82 though.

female fh with kok are so rare that ppl usually do not go and look for... if you see one of course you would buy it but would never be able to tell when they are juvie...

i will raise my tank temp to 80 and do a wc tonight before i pick up the aro tomorrow so it can be close to my tap water as much as possible... i use to house fh's in the tank so the ph is at about 7.6 but i took out all the coral a week ago and it still high for some reason. thanks

I prefer 82 and use tap ph. as for teacups which is a made up term there more then likely retics and are very sensitive. a nip from a jar is more then likely fatal. Also rays love swimming to top so dont think they stay away from each other. a few of mine were hit before separated. IF you do get a ray I would suggest hystrix or motoro they can handle a little more abuse and are suggested starter ray.

I have one growing out in a 40 Gallon. Its currently 3".
Temp: 82F
pH: 7.8 (This is what comes out of my tap)
I do a 50% WC once a week and always add aquarium salt.
So far Jar Jar Binks is doing great =]

i think he will stay in the tank alone then... extra things to worry about. thanks

i think my tap is 7.0 but my tank water is 7.6 at the moment maybe 7.2 i will have to do another wc maybe it will go down to 7.0 and i will raise my temp to 80/82 thanks!!

I would just keep the pH at whatever is coming out of the tap. That way you wont get crazy pH swings, especially in a smaller tank.
