keeping snakes in glass?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It will really depend on the species you want.... I have all my kings in aquariums but my pythons (scrubs, retic, carpets) are in melamine or plastic totes. the reason being that they definitely benefit from the solid walls and ventilation. Even my king snake tanks I have 3 of the walls covered with a solid non reflective material so as to reduce the amount of light that is reflected off the glass, this makes a more solid environment which almost all snakes feel much more secure in.
Snakes that tend to be more touchy to environmental factors I would never keep in a glass tank. having a solid top and side vents really works wonders on those that are prone to RI or just more finicky about their environment in general.
You could probably get away with a carpet in a glass tank, they tend to be more forgiving, but if you'r not wanting something huge aim for an Irian Jaya, they are the smallest of the carpets usually not getting more than 6ft for a large female. coastal carpets are the largest and they can routinely reach 12ft.
You will not need to and should not install any lights on a snake tank. As long as it is a room that does get light from somewhere (a window) that is all it needs. They don't need any supplementary light like many lizards do and in some cases the excess light can even stress them out, especially for nocturnal animals. For heat you will be much better off going with an under tank heating pad connected to a thermostat. Belly heat is always superior to over head heat for snakes (meaning no lights, just a heat mat)

Thanks slyvais!! when I said light I did mean heat light sorry was in class had to rush. so heres what I am thinking, heat mat (if thats all I need ) build a wooden roof with a 2ftx2ft area made of mesh for venting, cover up the wall withs something so the front is the only open area. I really have to do some more reading into whats required to keep snakes I only brefily went over it then we moved house and been fish fish fish fish fish, so not sure if theres anything else required, apart for water bowl to bask in trees etc etc.

Do I need some form of fans to vent? I notice lots of the setups here are sold with humidifiers and 3 light systems?

I have never heard or seen of any of the snakes you mentioned over here, my LFS (they stock everything) only has jungles diamonds jaguars drawins olives balls and a massive albino olive, I dont think we can get an irian jaya here ?

Thanks guys

I'm not an expert just asking because I want to know.. Will the heat pad further crack the glass?

Doubt it would get hot enough to cause the glass to crack I believe glass has to be way over 30+C to melt so to crack you would need something close to the melting point, it could be poss tho because it sits out in the mebourne summer (30+) which may of caused the crack? :O

No, the heat pad will not further crack the glass. My one Breeder tank was a decomissioned 300 Gallon tank that I partitioned. It was decomissioned because the bottom had a crack from one corner all the way down to the other corner... The LFS sold me the tank for $25.00 as long as I promised not to try and repair it.

Wish I would have known that before I sold my water dragon... His tank cracked so I threw it out

Ouch... All I did was fill the crack with RTV Silicone, waited for it to cure. Then laid in a piece of Reptile carpet. Set in the dividers and put a lid on. The pads were underneath and plugged into a power strip...
