Paddlefish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tend to agree. Let's all be a little more civil in this discussion. Whether these small paddlefish are dwarfed (genetically) in the sense of human dwarves (which are by no means a separate species) or stunted fish is something that would take a considerable amount of money to verify. It would be nice if we could let Moontanman share his paddlefish experience without all the flaming.

Li bought a (some?) paddlefish several years ago. I don't know how they did, but I don't see anyone trashing him because they aren't all still alive today. As Monsterfishkeepers we all try new things and push the limits of fishkeeping. If we could all have a little more subjective conversations (and a little more empathy, as my wife just said) we could all learn more and enjoy this site more.

Just my two cents...

+1 that's how we learn. I was flamed on another board because I had some species die in my 1700 gallon set-up. I was honest and shared all-good and bad so others could learn. Both JBijl and moontanman are doing the same -helping all of us to become better fish keepers and maybe even possible paddlefish keepers through their experiences. I would have never even thought about it without this thread and the info supplied by the experienced keepers. Now if everyone would stop the fish nerd fights and lets get back on track!
Dwarf "runt" paddlefish- I think it's possible. My beagle was the runt of the litter-she never did get full size. I would imagine a "dink" paddlefish would be much harder to keep alive as well-kudo's on your success.

What species did they flame you for? That biotope is amazing.

great information thanks to both of you for sharing your experience with these fish.

Thanks for the compliments but Sorry -that's off topic- lets keep this about paddlefish. I have a 10 foot long tank (about 400 gallons or so) I am setting up as a growout for paddlefish. I live in Minnesota so replicating the cold won't be a problem. Now I just need to find some "dinks" and give it a go.

You want to juse the tank where you ceap your ray's in ??? i hope not i like te ray tank
Replicating the cold in winter is easy but in the summer will be dificult
Getting dinks or baby paddelfish real easy go to the peopel that breed them for release in lake and riversystems

they sure are big fishes

With them getting as large as they do I don't see how anyone has room for them in there tank, these are my favorite fish to catch.

Your right about that this fish you can only keep if you give them atleast 1000 gallons a fish of room
and this is for a small one and not for a big one
