Paddlefish

I agree that if their are claims being thrown around about "genetic dwarf" paddlefish, then we need some legitimate sources rather than the word of an employee at a fish farm. The capability of totally unrelated fish to be genetic dwarfs is totally irrelevant to this discussion. You might as well be talking as if dwarf pigs prove the reality of dwarf paddlefish.

This thread has gone down hill. Started out as a productive one sharing information on how to keep a difficult specimen into a bunch of [filter bypass word]. Congrats guys! Most fish at some time started out as "impossible" until someone did it,documented it and others followed and repeated it. At least I learned they can be trained on pellets and "other" food than plankton- Thank you for sharing that information. I have also learned that a paddlefish even in a pond is cruel - they should technically be in a river 1000 miles long. But we stuff 20 guppies into a ten gallon tank and think nothing of it-in the wild even guppies live in spaces as large as a small swimming pool. Therefore we are all guilty-point the fingers at yourself.

+1 .. every bit of fish keeping is cruelty..we just don't think of it as such.

Poor thread. Time to take it out and shoot it. Which is a shame it was great, I was learning about a fish that I had no idea was even in aquaculture. One that was metaphorically in my back yard and I knew little about. But now it has just turned into a who knows more, who is the most right, little kids arguing on the play ground, bicker-fest. Thanks for that guys.

I think everyone reading this (who is an adult) should go watch the TMI episode of South Park. So much of the bickering fits right into the story of that episode. Seriously, if you guys are going to bicker like this pm each other a meet up spot, take a video of you guys beating the crap out of each other, post the video here, we can market it as "Fish Nerd Fights" kind of like the "Bum Fights", and use the proceeds to help MFK.

This is what i also are thinking if there is proof i will say i am sorry about my postings but until this time i say that they will get more than 6 feet or 2,20m and if you want to keep them you need a lot of space for them

Sorry Energy about my postings but when some one says whit out proof that you can keep them real smal and peopel will do this and they die it will be for the keeper of them frustrating and cruel for the animals certainly with a very sensitive paddelfish

I will agree that it is cruel but you can and if you realy give about them a better live, that is why i am bilding a new basin for them this wil be more than 150.000 liter whit a filter of 13.000 liter so they will get even more space to live and good live

Thanks chub-by but i find that if your keeping animals you have to give them what they need or dont keep that kind of animal if you cannot give them what they need

i dont heras you but i am telling you what my one opinion is from your postings about paddelfish that you realy do not no how to keep them that is why i this post here a paddelfish is like all the sturgeon you have to give them space to live this kind of fish you cannot ceap small for a long time think you had 12 paddelfish and now you have one that is 11 dead so why are you still saying that you can keep them small this fish get more than 6 feet so i can say that i find that you dont give good advice and that your realy not a expert in keeping paddelfish and this fish deserves better

Guys, i followed the directions of the fish farm that grows these fish and has been growing them for many years, I followed their directions and they fish lived very well, I was saddened by the deaths but if any of you have never killed a fish i will concede you are correct but I had no control over predatory birds and while i am to blame for equipment failures i see no reason to give my self a hard time over it. the fish would have been destroyed if I hadn't taken them. They would have simply been thrown into a landfill. I managed to learn quite a bit from those fish and I shared every detail with everyone here. The mistakes and the successes, i could have been dishonest and lied but I didn't. yes I lost 11 fish, most of them to bird predators but some to things i should have taken into account. I still have one that is around 10" long, he has not lacked for food or space, why is he still small if it is not a genetic defect like the fish farm said?

Hahahaha It's like when two parents fight for custody over their children and then start verbally attacking each other while the kids are just sitting on the sideline watching. The fish nerd fights idea is real creative though.

I tend to agree. Let's all be a little more civil in this discussion. Whether these small paddlefish are dwarfed (genetically) in the sense of human dwarves (which are by no means a separate species) or stunted fish is something that would take a considerable amount of money to verify. It would be nice if we could let Moontanman share his paddlefish experience without all the flaming.

Li bought a (some?) paddlefish several years ago. I don't know how they did, but I don't see anyone trashing him because they aren't all still alive today. As Monsterfishkeepers we all try new things and push the limits of fishkeeping. If we could all have a little more subjective conversations (and a little more empathy, as my wife just said) we could all learn more and enjoy this site more.
