I have, and actually prefer the mayans, but it depends on what your looking for... Also. He was referring only to the barred midas, not the other species and varieties. Comparing the barred midas to a Mayan; the midas will hate you and probably be a glass banger, the Mayan is more mild, but prettier and also will greet the owner (begging, not banging, Lol) it also depends on the individual fish.
As for the op, I think its a barred midas. It's possible to be something else, but its obviously not happy (clamped fins and stress bars... They probably would lighten a little to dark grey if he was happy). Good luck!

A mayan is an Amph, I've kept a few Amph species and Mayans and found the mayans to be more interesting characters, now if we just turn a midas dull and striped we have every "Barred" type available. they just don't appeal to me. I don't like Peacock bass either cause they are boring and dull but I would pick one of those over a barred midas of any description.
