I just got a 135g off Craigslist, with a crappy stand and hood and I had to put a TON of work into it. It was obviously neglected for a long time, and it had a 7"(TL) Green Terror, a 4 1/2" and 3" Managuense pair and a few random plecos. They said the GT is around 6 years old. I think it's a male, but has only ever been fed Tetra flakes and it's never had tank changes...should I expect any growth out of him now that he will get 50% weekly water changes and tons of GOOD food?

6 yrs old is a long time. So you probably won't expect much growth if any out of him.. Could possibly be a female too. Pics would be best in this situation.. Things to look for would be crooked back, eyes that seem too large for the GT's body and other noticeable deformities. But wow.. Never had a water change huh??

Yeah it was major neglect on the tank and it's inhabitants. The GT looks decent, but maybe a little malnourished. Hes been eating bloodworms and NLS like he's never had good food. Poor dude. I'll take some pics of him in a bit.

Growth seems unlikely, though there are plenty of males that don't get more than 7" and that's fairly large for a female. Hopefully you'll see an improvement in color. If this is your first GT, I suggest light colored/natural substrate. Black/dark substrate keeps their bodies darker and less colorful.

Look forward to pics. GTs, common or not, are still my favorites.

Awesome thanks for the info. His colors are already beginning to improve with the NLS and bloodworms. It's actually my 3rd GT. I had a mega male about 14 years ago and ive got a 2" GT in my 240. Green terrors definitely cool fish.

Here's the only pics hes letting me get. Him and the Jag are super shy...they didn't even have lights on their tank, so now when the lights come on they rush for cover.

It's a male for sure. Better water quality and a proper diet might induce a growth spurt but it's hard to be sure if he really is 6 years old.

He looks a little emaciated, his head seems much larger than the rest of his body.

I was thinking that as well. He's got an appetite so that's half the battle. And with the way I feed my fish he'll fatten up in no time. The people who had him before just threw tetra flakes in every so often. Now he's in a tank that I feed 2-3times a day.
