Vieja Zonatus fry:)

Sorry, Didn't realize I was talking to a fish god- Care to define True Zonatus? My fish certainly looks like a hundred other pictures of zonatus out there.

fish god??? :ROFL:true zonatus are bought from a reputable vendor with provenance going back to the river they came from. all that i was saying. lots of hydridization out there with vieja and paratheraps (which is what zonatus is classified as) so true specimens are sometimes hard to come by.

Ok I'm editing this post because the firts one I wrote was a pretty crabby an I just woke up to read yours which seemed presumptive. the wholesaler is pretty reputable and has been around for 50 plus years they're just big. I know they're wild caught that is all but I sent a message to their buyer to find more info.
I know you're more into these fish than I am- I really just want to post a vid of my cool fry and fish that I hope others would enjoy. Ill post more info when I get it on them.

Not trying to beat you down on your pair. They are a great looking pair. But they look more like Hartwegi to me. If I were you I would really look into them before you sell them as something they may not be.

Good luck.

I agree with you- they do look like hartwegi and brought that up to my dealer who assured me they were zonatus I checked into their locale not much info there- except that they're not actually wild. big suprise there for my incorrect assumption. They were raised in florida from a breeder who specializes in central and south american cichlids. But seriously, I'm not going to sell the fry as anything more than convicts lol! I'm no specialist and people who want these fish want something exactly what they want-and I respect that- Open apology to fishman09- these fry will be 5 dollar specials at best when they are sellable to people who know what vieja are and can care for them at the very least. If I sell something I want to be damn sure It is what it's supposed to be. The excitement for me with these fish is that they came in, paired up and in no time laid eggs .. yahoo!
There are quite a lot of pictures of zonatus out there that look much like mine aswell though like this one

I'll tell you what! These little babies are ferocious and hardy! I can;t believe what they will eat and how much of it they consume! I started with baby brine for a few days while feeding the mother bloodworm cubes. I noticed at day 5 that the babies piled onto the cubes and started tearing at them. wow! I still feed them a mix of bb, omega first flakes, bw cubes and spirilina but wow! If they're hungry they try to feed of their moms slime coat. Seriously though- anybody breeding these? I wonder if you've seen the same? amazing to me!

Yes, thats why I was asking about what they are. I have 2 spawning pairs, 1 from Rio Nanchatal the other from Mojarra Prieta. Also have Fenestratus and Hartwegi about to spawn.

And yes, they are hungry little buggers. One thing that I noticed that the Zonatus do that no other fish (that I have spawned so far) do, and that is that both parents are constantly flapping their fins and burrow into the sand substrate to stir up food in the sand for the fry to feed on.
