This is their 5th spawn. They are great parents. I leave them with their fry for about 10 days before removing the parents. This spawn produced roughly 250 fry.

8 days old fry without the parents.

Every time I remove the parents from their young, they act very sad for 3-4 days before they come back to their old selves again. Sometimes they don't bother to eat for a couple of days ... :(

Congratulations on the spawns.I have 3 pairs, all terrible parents. They either eat the eggs or eat the fry when they become free swimming.I do manage to save some fry by hatching artificially, but not that many. What do you feed your fry?

Thats awesome, I'm trying to get a pair. Currently I have 3 angels of about 2'' and i plan on getting at least 2 more. Any tips? :)
I bought 8 of them from dime size at a LFS. And 2 pairs formed after a little over a year. The rest were all male I think (large hump on the head - bickering all the time ... :D).
You'll have a great chance to have at least a pair or 2 if you raise 6 to 8 fry.
Hope it'll help.

Thanks. Honest to you I don't know what to do with them ... :D
My last batch, I traded for some fish food at a LFS. They got a couple hundred of the fry for $50.00 inflated fish food worth $20 online ... :(
My other pair are bad parents themselves. After a few tries, I waited a few hours after they laid and fertilized the eggs, I took the eggs out and put them in a jar to raise them myself. I put some drops of meth blue to prevent fungus, and have a pump running to provide oxygen. The hatching rates are the same, pretty high as well.

The first few days after free swimming are very critical. If they don't have the right food to eat, they'll die off quickly.
For the first 3-4 days, I feed them micro-worms, because they are so tiny to eat BBS yet.
After 3-4 days, I feed them BBS. The younger the BS are the better for the fry. They are getting bigger every day eating BBS.
After a month, I feed them crushed flakes.

I always have a few boxes of micro-worms at all time for back up. If you keep the micro-worms in a cool place, they last for a long while, more than a couple of months.
Even the big fry love them too. But they are not as nutritious as BBS.

Hope it'll help

I have heard about micro worms, but never used them.I use frozen bbs and some prepared food for fry I got off Aquabid.Where can you get micro worms from?

You can get a small bag of starter micro-worms on ebay for $3.00 include shipping. Right, three bucks includes shipping.

Find some small plastic containers and put some plain oatmeal mix with warm water (no need to cook it), sprinkle a pinch of yeast, then place the starter worms on top. Place the container in a warm place. A few days later you have 2.5 million worms to feed your fry.
You can google how to culture micro-worms ... it's pretty easy.
Frozen brine shrimp are too big for these fry, and have very little nutritious for growth.
If it's not moving, the fry won't eat it.
You put worms and baby brine shrimp in the tank, you'll see these little piglets go after them like M&M candies.
Hope it'll help.

Thnx man, thats the plan - getting 6 2"ers and let them pair of, once i get a pair take out the rest. i had 6 last time and only 1 of them was female, but she died so i'm starting over now. I know I'm very far away at the moment but any tricks to keep in mind for inducing them to spawn when the time comes?

Once my fish pair up, I put them in a 30 gallon tank all by themselves.

During this time, I feed them exclusively live black worms to induce spawning. I also raise the water temp a couple more degree, around 82-83F.

I place a large tube straight up along the tank's wall, and a piece of slab just in case the prefer one over the other. Soon after spawning I can do either parent raise or artificial. Angel eggs are easy to hatch artificially then most fish.

Right after the fry are free swimming, I feed them 5-6-7 times/a day. After 1 week when the fry can be scared away with my hand, I do water change.

One month later, I feed them finely crushed flakes.

I am a fan of California and Australian Black Worms, and plain beef heart.

Live Black Worms I get from Dan, freeze dried I get from either Dan or Al (simplydiscus.com). Fish love them either forms.

I used to feed my breeding fish with different food before but for some reasons, their batches were always smaller than the ones I fed Black Worms.

I notice even the small mom could still lay hundreds of eggs.

I have a 5+ inch discus lay 100s more eggs than the 7+ inch. I am not a scientist so I have no proof, but I see the result.

Hope it'll help
